Why are you the best candidate?

on 29 November 2020

One of the questions you may get asked during the interview process is ‘why are you the best candidate for this role?’. This is fairly common for people looking for banking jobs in Malta. It’s good to prepare an answer for this beforehand so you’re not stumped when the question is presented to you!

Firstly, try and share your enthusiasm for the role.

You need to come across as genuinely excited about the potential career opportunity ahead. If the other candidates are only applying because they need the salary but aren’t that interested in the role, then you will definitely have the upper hand.

This is also the perfect time to convey your strength of character– how you can overcome challenges, are determined, loyal and have the staying power to see through difficult times.  In today’s rapidly changing business environment, these characteristics are important to promote.

Candidates often have the same set of skills and experience, but how they culturally fit into a team is also important. Interviewers are often trying to see how you may integrate into the rest of the team – if your personality will be a good fit with those already working there. As an interviewee you need to try and pick up on cues as to what type of person they are looking for and put forward your relevant attributes.

Try to avoid talking about why you really want the job and rather focus on how you would add value to the company. Make sure you research the company ahead of time so that you know what their core values are and how you can add your skills and experience to this.

When an interviewer asks why you are the best candidate for this position, they don’t expect you to compare yourself to other candidates but they are assessing how well you understand the job and how confident you are in your abilities. Saying that, you should be honest – don’t exaggerate or lie but do mention any accomplishments or awards you’ve received.

In conclusion, you need to try and sell yourself as best you can. By brain storming and coming up with suitable answers before the interview you’re already ahead of the game. Prepare well and good luck!
