The Goal is not to be Successful but Valuable

Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value”. I decided to start my article by borrowing these wise words, said by a wiser individual, Albert Einstein, since they summarise perfectly what one needs to always aim for when doing business – Adding Value.

In today’s digital world, it is easier to initiate a business than it was a few years ago, especially if you already have a great website in place and do your utmost to keep your Facebook/Twitter/Instagram pages constantly updated so that your followers are entertained. Nowadays, people are managing to capitalise on “innovative” ideas, sometimes by simply copying what their competition is doing. It is true that there has never been so much commercial competition available, but it is also true that we have never been as populated as we are today.

If a particular small business opens up in a specific area and starts to do well, rest assured that within a couple of years there will be a number of similar businesses which will also open up in the same area, offering the same services at similar prices or possibly slightly lower. I am not saying that this is bad, since it can lead to healthy commercial competition by pushing everyone to be at their best all the time. What I am saying is that even though we might be innovative today, it doesn’t mean it will remain like this in the future. However, if I may bet €2 on which business would last the longest, I wouldn’t bet on the cheapest but on the one which adds more value to the respective customers.

Unfortunately, nowadays a lot of energy is being focused on how to become successful or how to make a quick buck, but very few people focus on how to be valuable, not only commercially but even to each other among colleagues or outside in our day-to-day things. We are living in a fast-paced environment but that doesn’t mean forgetting that we are all humans after all. We should always do our best to genuinely excel in the service we are providing, whether it is being provided to a client of ours or to a colleague.

I remember an elderly person once told me, “Your business priority should be to have your clients attend your funeral and not your events. That is when you realise the added value you’ve given them”

Whilst it is important that we always strive for success, adding value is the key. There are various ways how to target new customers or attract new audience, but the success lies in retaining them and having them come for more. Adding value to a business will help you grow the business and get promoted quicker; adding value to customers will help you increase online traffic and sales; adding value to clients will help you increase business leads and referrals. The moment you are valuable is the actual moment you are successful in what you do.
